Understanding C-Sections
A C-section is also referred to as a cesarean section. This procedure is sometimes performed during a pregnancy when the woman is in labor. Cesarean babies are born through an incision in the uterus and the abdomen. This procedure is safe for moms and babies. It is performed when a life-threatening situation arises before or during labor and delivery. It is a type of surgery that can save both mom and her child's life.
For the most part women who have to have a c-section performed are unaware of that fact before it happens. The majority of the time babies who are born via a c-section are of high risk. C-sections are performed primarily because the health of the new mom or her baby is at risk. One such reason would involve the umbilical cord. If it was to fall into the vagina or wrap itself around the baby's neck, an emergency c-section may be performed. Another reason for the surgery could be because of the placenta. If bleeding occurs it could threaten the life of your unborn child.
Sometimes vaginal delivery is compromised when there is fetal distress. If a baby's heartbeat slows or acid is present in the bloodstream the surgery may be the only option for a healthy delivery. During labor and delivery the process may progress at a slow rate or stop and this may cause a reason for a c-section to be performed. Fetal illness, such as spinal bifida, can affect how a newborn is delivered. This particular disease is a birth defect that affects the spinal cord and backbone and a c-section is the only option for a safe delivery.
The procedure for a c-section is virtually painless while you still may feel a few tugs or pulls as the baby is removed. The procedure can take an hour to perform. During the surgery one incision is made as a horizontal or bikini cut right above your pubic bone. The second incision is made in the wall of the uterus and the amniotic sac is opened and the baby is removed. It requires a longer hospital stay and about 4 weeks afterwards to fully recover. When vaginal labor is not a safe route that is when a c-section comes into play. It can save the mother's and baby's life if either is in distress. This surgery is something of the last minute when you are in labor. It is safe and makes good sense when your little ones life is in danger. |
