Relieving Pain during Labor
When you choose your childbirth class, you will learn several different techniques that can aid in relieving pain during labor. According to which class you decide on there will be a variety of ways in which to relieve the pain. Some classes will teach you breathing techniques, focusing on something other than the pain, and so forth and so on.
However, just because you are doing exactly what you are suppose to be doing; there will still be some problems with pain. There are other things that cause pain, such as lying in the same positions for long periods of time, soreness in the lower pain from labor pains, and quite a few others. You can get help with this pain as well.
Try to change your position as often as you can. If the labor pains are far enough apart and your doctor will allow, get out of bed and walk around the room, sit in a comfortable chair, or just stand and look out the window. This will help you with the pain from lying in bed the entire time.
Learn relaxation techniques, these can be found during many childbirth classes including breathing, yoga, and more.
Ask a friend or family member to rub your feet. A good foot massage is very relaxing; however, you may not wish to be having a massaging if your contractions as close.
Go to the bathroom at least every hour. If your bladder is full, it will prevent the baby from moving down into birth canal causing labor to last longer.
Turn off the lights or have the lights dimmed. In between contractions, rest as much as possible. Listen to quiet and relaxing music with the lights dimmed. This should also aid in relaxing you and allowing you a bit of rest time during contractions.
For low back, ask someone to rub your low back. This can be very helpful especially if most of your labor pains are in your back.
Keep a cool cloth handy to place on your face or forehead. This can be rejuvenating. If at all possible, take a warm shower or bath, which is another way to unwind and relax.
The most important thing to remember when trying to control pain is that you need to be relaxed and calm. If listening to music, having the lights dimmed, or walking around a bit helps you relax, then let your doctor know. Labor and delivery will go smoother if you are relaxed and can control your pain. |
